The Author Joy James was born in Ipswich during the 2nd world war and moved to Nottingham in 1942. Schooled in Bluebell Hill, Pierrepoint and John Player, she went on to have success as a singer, appeared on Opportunity Knocks and worked in many countries doing cabaret. She was also resident at the Commodore International, Wembley, Musters and Manor clubs. When Central TV moved to Nottingham, she went into the acting field almost by accident. The BBC were making D H Lawrence’s The Rainbow and when the call went out for a woman with a strong Nottingham accent to play the midwife her agent, Jack Denman, sent her to audition and to her surprise she got the part.That led to other parts requiring the Nottingham accent. She also worked for various TV companies in many other productions including; Oliver Twist, Barchester Chronicles, By the Sword Divided, Son’s and Lover’s, The Diary of Adrian Mole, Jenny’s War, Narnia’s Chronicles, Tales of Sherwood Forest, Reznick, and she also played Bill Maynard’s wife in the radio serial Cobblers. Twice married and with three daughters and five grandchildren, she now enjoys a busy retirement and is a parish councillor for the village in which she lives. Joys second book is a companion to go with her first publication ‘Yo’d Mek a Parson Swear’ which gave an insight to her young life in and around St Ann’s, Nottingham during the war years whereas this book describes the Family move to Broxtowe and Bobbers Mill, Nottingham from her teens to adulthood.
